As you can see I am home and I'm trying to capture everything from the week :)
Last week my head took over my heart and I was able to think clearly and determinedly. So as we got closer to surgery I wasn't as emotional as I had been and looked at it like completing a project deadline. So of course something had to try and throw us off course. Monday, B and I had a train scheduled at 1 and around 10:30 I received a call from the doctor's office saying insurance had denied the surgery but it was pending a review - could I call insurance and plead my case to have them expedite it? I had already received a letter authorizing the surgery from my insurance but my doctor updated some of the codes since our appointment on the 28th. We had planned to leave the house at 11 to give us plenty of time to get to the train station, so for 30 minutes we were still preparing to leave for NYC unsure of what was going to happen when we got there. I called insurance and plead my case and maybe 15 minutes later the doctor's office said the authorization had been approved! My parents had arrived at the house ready to stay there with M for the week and I jokingly said with everything that has happened leading up to this maybe my luck will turn and I will come out of the surgery dancing. I haven't tried dancing yet but it did go well.
We said our goodbyes and I was able to keep myself together fairly well. I prepared cards for M to open each day while we were gone and a scavenger hunt while the procedure was taking place.
On our way to the train my doctor called to check on me and said I was scheduled for surgery first thing in the morning. I was relieved by that news, less time to wait and worry and more time to recover. We caught the train and felt a little lighter and enjoyed the chance to talk just the two of us. I had a CT scan scheduled less than an hour after we got there so we raced to the hospital. The scan was quick and easy and we were then able to check into the hospital hotel, which was quite nice. It is right around the corner from the hospital and the room was huge for a NYC room, included a kitchenette and priced fairly. In fact the hotel is a nonprofit so we weren't charged any taxes.
We had dinner reservations at 8 knowing I would have to stop eating before midnight, but since everything was running early we decided to see if we could get in early. Knowing us we had thoughtfully planned my "last supper", I wanted something special, light, and healthy. Originally I thought Lebanese or Greek but then I read an article about avoiding potatoes, tomatoes and eggplant before anesthesia so we found a well reviewed ceviche spot nearby. It was one of the best meals I have ever had. The presentation was gorgeous and everything was so so fresh and delicious. We'll definitely go back if we end up having to stay the night for one of my follow ups. I think at this point everything was starting to catch up with B, but I was still feeling pretty zen. We headed back to the hotel knowing we had to be at the hospital the next morning at 5:30 and got a fair night's rest.
