Last week I had appointments in NYC and I had a lot of feelings leading up to it and I found myself listening to a lot of late 90s / early 00s dance / pop music. I think I was trying to remember a more carefree time in my life where I could physically dance for hours from the night into the day. One of my favorite songs from this era is "Dr. Jones" by Aqua. I spent a semester in London, and spent most of that time dancing and laughing to that song in a tiny club in Earls Court. So I began to wonder - is this my next anesthesia song?
I had three theme songs for Surgery Une; finding HSS and leading up to surgery was "Welcome to New York" by Taylor Swift, anesthesia was "Daylight" by Harry Styles, and recovery was "Cruel Summer" by Taylor Swift. "Welcome to New York" just fit as it felt like a sort of homecoming being back there and at the same time M was discovering Taylor Swift. My anesthesia song was a surprise to me - I didn't know it was a thing until they asked me before surgery, so after a quick debate with the anesthesiologist between Taylor, BTS and Harry Styles, we went with "Daylight" because it's a song that you could gently wind down or wake up to. Then with "Cruel Summer" my recovery wasn't cruel but the lyrics "summer's a knife,", "I'm always waiting for you just to cut to the bone," and "the shape of your body is new," all kind of fit me getting to know my new body.
I have another medical musical tradition that when I have MRIs done, often the tech will ask you if you want to listen to music and what kind and I always ask to listen to the music that they are listening to. It's a way to discover something new and connect. Last week I had MRIs and he asked me about music and then said he doesn't listen to music while he's working, so I said pop music. So wouldn't you know, the first song that came on once I was in the tube was "Anxiety" by Doechii. Thankfully I am not nearly as anxious about MRIs, but it made me laugh and I was happy when it ended.
